The plastic free shopper – how to buy food without the plastic.
The answer may seem obvious - choose food in non plastic packaging. Not so easy to find and more often then not you have to make your own packaging – and heres how.
Take your own reusable carrier bags .
Buy unwrapped fruit, veg and bread and put them in your own reusable produce bags.
Buy unwrapped cheese and cooked meats – Queensgate Market has some excellent stalls selling cheese and Palma ham, salamis and sausages.Take your own greaseproof paper bags to put them in. Greaseproof bags are made from paper and so will biodegrade on the compost heap.
Handy Hints for the Plastic Purist. Often the retailert will use a thin plastic sheet to handle the product – health and safety. If you take grease proof paper sheets cut to size it makes their job a lot easier.
Go to the butchers and buy unwrapped meat, bacon and sausages. Find a fish monger who sell unpacked fish. Take your own biobags to wrap up these moist products. Like plastic, these bags are water proof but because they are made from vegetable products such as cornstarch they are compostable. Compostable means they fully biodegrade – you can put them on the compost heap. Getting the bags is easy – try www.biobags.co.uk or The Bin Company at www.thebincompany.com call them on – 0845 602 3630.
